Dismantling the New Jim Crow: How We Can Transform our Criminal Justice System in Durham--A Vision for the First 100 Days

Durham voted for a change in our criminal justice system when we elected a new District Attorney and a new Sheriff. Now we have the opportunity in the upcoming election to elect new District and Superior Court judges who are committed to transformation of our criminal justice system. We want to make sure our new leaders are going to promote justice over incarceration throughout their time in office.

Hear from Satana DeBerry, Durham County District Attorney-elect; Clarence Birkhead, Durham County Sheriff-elect; and State Representative Marcia Morey, former Chief Judge of Durham County District Court, and justice-involved folks as we discuss how we can hold our elected officials accountable in their first 100 days in office to:

• Reduce the number of people in Durham County Jail.
• Reduce fees and cost in the court system.
• Eliminate the cash bail system.

PA's Race Equity team conducted a months long process, engaging many community partners, to identify key areas of action to build a more just criminal justice system in Durham. This process led to a long list of recommendations that could be implemented over the short and long term. The team further narrowed that list to prioritize actions that should be implemented in the first hundred days of the Deberry and Birkhead administrations, which will begin January 2019.
