Our public school students and teachers need your help! People’s Alliance is calling for the County Commissioners to approve the budget request from the Durham Board of Education which proposes an increase in the DPS school budget to: 1) Fund School Growth, 2) Save 33 teaching positions, 3) Provide a 3% raise to classified employees, and 4) Increase salary supplements for experienced teachers.
Important notes on this budget:
- Funding from the County last year was flat with no increase. We are asking for an increase over last year of $7,690,000.
- Without funding, we will lose 33 teaching positions and be forced to make other tough choices in our already stretched school budgets.
- This budget includes massive cuts proposed by DPS in the Central Office and services and operations (66 positions and $7+ million in supplies & materials).
And now we just got the news that the County Manager did not recommend fully funding DPS's request. This means we need to get to work!
HOW YOU CAN HELP:
1: EMAIL THE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS TODAY! Ask them to fund our schools and approve the 2015/16 DPS budget proposed by the Board of Education.
2: SPREAD THE WORD: Forward this to your fellow DPS supporters and neighbors asking them to email the County Commissioners and come to budget hearing on June 8th!
