Zoning and Planning
Zoning and planning simultaneously promotes social justice, economic
opportunities, and environmental security for everyone by balancing
private property rights while securing public needs. Rules and
regulations embody these long-term needs through prescriptions and
limitations for short-term development and land-use changes that promote
the sustainable use of resources. Conflicts often arise when short-term
economic conditions or private gains appear sufficiently important to
sacrifice long-term environmental services such as air, water, energy,
and food security.
The Zoning and Planning Committee seeks to:
1) Educate citizens on the role of zoning and planning with respect to
sustainable economic development and environmental security.
2) Provide research and understanding on the issues that affect Durham’s
sustainable economic infrastructure while maintaining its environmental
security.
If interested in joining this committee, please contact the Zoning Chair.
