2013 GOALS:
Affordable Living – City Council and County Commission will develop and adopt plans to expand the number of homes where low-income people can afford to live and walk to Durham and regional rail/bus transit stations and service for generations to come.
Invest $750,000 annually to increase the stock of housing that provides permanent homes for extremely low-income people, the one-fifth of Durham households whose incomes are lower than 30% of the Durham area median. In addition to Continuum of Care operating and program support, expand the number of homes where people receive health care and integrated services they need to maintain stable and safe housing.
KEY ACTIVITIES:
- Participate in city, county and local planning and budgeting to meet housing goals
- Advocate and raise awareness of Durham’s needs and current plans, in coalition with an expanding circle of active residents and organizations
KEY EVENTS:
Now until June: advocate with City Council members to ask that the City Manager’s 2013-14 budget and the Five year Capital Improvement Program include $750,000 for housing for extremely low-income people. Expand the number of organizations and individuals who actively support this target. Instigate media coverage of the need and Durham’s current plans.
May 16: Council to End Homelessness meeting: present goal and ask for Council advice and support
June 3: City Council Budget hearing: An expanded well prepared group of advocates and organizations support this $750,000 investment
