Criminal Justice

The PA Criminal Justice Committee had its first organizational meeting in conjunction with the January 31 Membership Meeting.  The group agreed on a tentative mission statement: “To research and take action on issues to benefit the fair and efficient administration of justice in Durham County”.

The Committee is interested in, among other issues, ways to reduce employability problems for persons with criminal records; treatment of Latinos in all aspects of the criminal justice system; the state legislative proposal that a photo ID be required for voting; and the proposal for alternatives to expensive incarceration for minor offenders with mental health or substance abuse problems (which would implement the recommendations of a recent task force on that subject).
