January 20th Membership Meeting:  City & County Budget for 2010/11 and Election of Officers and Coordinating Committee

$1 Billion -Where Does it Go? Where Should it Go?
The first PA membership meeting of 2010 will feature staff from the Durham City and County budget office, discussing planned expenditures for 2010-11, issues that will affect us all (but some more than others?) and how we can impact the budgeting process. Here are some ideas of items PA can push for:

·         Including yard waste program into the tax base

·         Adding a half-cent/a one cent to tax base for housing for homeless/low income citizens

  • Increasing water capacity of water reservoirs

·         Repair deteriorating pipe infrastructure

PLEASE BRING YOUR BUDGET REQUESTS IN WRITING

PA Hires New Coordinator

voteKate Fellman has joined PA as the new staff Coordinator. Originally from Minnesota, Kate came to North Carolina four years ago worried about not finding a "progressive home", but was overjoyed when she found Durham was a perfect fit for her political leanings!

Kate has a long list of activism in politics. She was an intern at the Wellstone for Senate campaign in
Minnesota. Since moving here she has remained active in the community despite having two young children. Kate was a North Durham campaign coordinator for Obama for America. This year she was elected Chair of Precinct 37. Along with being active in her homeowners association, PTA, and neighborhood book club, in her free time Kate enjoys attending her childrens sporting events, Hurricanes games, and is a fitness enthusiast (yoga, pilates, spin...you name it!).

She looks forward to meeting and working with all PA members and is exciting about GROWING membership in 2010!

Additional Plaudits to PA Members and Friends

Mea Culpa. Inevitably, I left out some PA volunteers and PA members from our "Thanks" note last month --  dropping a whole line of public officials who work faithfully with PA on on progressive policies was a real oversight. A little late: Thanks to BIll Bell, Cora-Cole McFadden and Eugene Brown for thier work with PA and the community this year.

Finally I left out Andrew Edmonds, who has been faithfully updating the current PA website so we're actually highlighting recent events and PA activities - not those long past. Thanks Andrew!
