History And Accomplishments

The Durham People’s Alliance is a progressive community organization with a history of accomplishment on a wide range of city and county issues including education, the environment, economic justice and sound economic growth for our community.

People’s Alliance also works on such issues as campaign finance reform, watershed protection, solid waste, public transportation, LGBT rights, and affordable housing.

People’s Alliance has been the driving force behind passing a “livable” wage ordinance Durham. PA has been instrumental in focusing the mission of the Economic Development Commission on measurably reducing poverty in our community. PA also is participating in a welfare reform coalition which was formed to address problems which arise as women and children are cut from public assistance.

Since its founding in 1976, the People’s Alliance has played a significant role — often in the face of strong opposition — in the success of several progressive accomplishments.
